John Tunstall

My interest in painting, the use of colour and balance, began in my youth and has run with me throughout my life. I have always seen myself as an abstract painter, but have gradually become even more abstract as I attempt to introduce balance of colour and form into my interpretation of a particular subject. I have worked in oil but am currently turning more and more towards acrylic as an easier medium when working outside.

The examples of my work illustrate this gradual transition. The first, and earliest, is a view of a small Spanish house in a state of gradual dereliction. This is a scene that I have painted a number of times at different times of day and season when the light leads to a different interpretation of the setting. The house regrettably is no more but lives on in my paintings. The second brings a more abstract interpretation of a NY scene - the inimitable brown bag deposited on a street somewhere in Manhattan . The final one, the most recent, is introducing a spatial scene – the movement of the horses set into an abstract background.
