Welcome to the Guildford Art Society

We welcome people of all ages, practising artists of all abilities and those who just have an interest in the arts. We have over 300 members many of whom are professional or talented amateur artists. To learn about some of them, click on ARTISTS

Guildford Art Society runs a very full programme of events, made up of demonstrations, talks, appraisals, and workshops in the Spring, Autumn and Winter. Meetings are held at St. Catherine's Hall, Chestnut Avenue , Guildford (for map click here) In the summer months, regular outdoor paintings days are organised.

The Art Society was founded in 1923 as Abbotswood Sketching Club, and had its first Exhibition at the Stoke Institute in 1925, which was opened by Mary Watts, widow of the famous Victorian painter G.F.Watts

The Society has an interesting history. The Exhibitions were once held in the same building as the local Assizes, and on one occasion the Assizes were cancelled to make way for the Exhibition. For many years artist Edward Wesson was the Chairman, and many other distinguished local people have been involved over the years.

This website is run for the benefit of the members. If you want to contribute any news, images or comments please click Click here to contact ushere.
